The Institute’s staff is cosmopolitan, with an expertise in Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology and International Relations. Research Fellows have degrees from various EU countries and the United States. Institute's team includes regular members of staff and associated researchers in over 25 countries.

DIRECTOR

Prof. Dr. Christian W. Haerpfer is the Founding Director of the Institute for Comparative Survey Research “Eurasia Barometer”. He received a PhD Degree and a Habilitation in Political Science at the University of Vienna (Austria) and a MSc Degree in Politics and International Relations at the University of Strathclyde (UK). Since 2003, Dr Haerpfer is Research Professor of Political Science in the Department of Political Science at the University of Vienna (Austria). Dr. Haerpfer was Full Professor of Political Science and Sociology in the Department of Government and Society at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in the period 2017-2021. In the period 2004 – 2016, Dr Haerpfer was Full Professor of Political Science and holder of a Named Chair, the ‘Established First Chair in Politics’ in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom).

Prof. Haerpfer is the Founding Director of the ‘Eurasia Barometer - EAB’ in Vienna (Austria), which is analysing social, economic and political change in Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova), South Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) in 3 waves in the period 2000 – 2021.

Prof. Haerpfer is the Founding Director of the ‘New Democracy Barometer – NDB’ in Vienna (Austria), which studied political, economic and social transformations in post-Communist Europe in 6 waves between 1990 and 1999. The New Democracies Barometer has been conducted in Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine.

Prof. Haerpfer is President of the World Values Survey Association (WVSA) in Stockholm (Sweden) since 2013.The World Values Survey has been conducted in 105 countries in 7 waves since 1981. In 2022 he was re-elected as President of the WVS for the period 2022-2028.

Prof. Haerpfer has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK), Hebrew University Jerusalem (Israel), National University of Rwanda (Kigali, Rwanda), University of Kharkiv (Ukraine) and University of Salzburg (Austria). He has received fellowships from the Leverhulme Trust (London, UK), the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars (Washington D.C., USA), the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and the University of Essex (UK).
